Up for your consideration is a unique, hand-made prototype of the Volkswagen Phaeton scale model, originally created by Minichamps for Volkswagen as a pre-production approval sample.
This prototype was developed as part of the "Große Produktpflege" (major facelift) project around 2006-2007. However, Volkswagen ultimately opted for a more simplified and conservative design for the facelifted Phaeton, leading to the cancellation of models with this type of body kit and the development of new samples that represented the final production version.
Or was it something more?
Upon closer inspection, the front grille and bumper of this prototype strikingly resemble the R-Line styling found on Volkswagen models from that era. The design elements share common ground with solutions used on the Golf R32, Passat R36, and Touareg R50. This raises an intriguing question: could this have been a concept for a sportier, more powerful flagship variant—the cancelled Phaeton R60—rather than just an early exploratory prototype of a regular facelift? In those years, rumors heavily circulated in the automotive press about a top-tier version producing nearly 600 hp with a twin-turbo W12 engine from Bentley, which ultimately never entered production.
According to available information, the Minichamps factory produced only about 10-20 examples of these trial castings in a few base colors for internal VAG approval needs (Factory Tooling Samples). Most of them were designated for destruction, making the surviving models an exceptional collector's rarity.
This sample clearly demonstrates that its body geometry is unique and differs from both the first generation (GP0) and the subsequent official facelift (GP1).
In photos 5 and 6, the differences between the R60 prototype and the official dealer GP1 facelift (original part number 3D0099300GPR7Q) are clearly shown. Photos 7 and 8 demonstrate the structural differences between the R60 prototype and the base pre-facelift GP0 body from 2002. This specific model is also marked on the box with part number 3D0099300GPR7Q.
Key structural features and prototype differences:
• Front fascia design: The model has a completely different bonnet, radiator grille, and front bumper configuration. Instead of the classic style, it features an aggressive split-bumper with pronounced air intakes and horizontal chrome slats in the R-Line style.
• Front headlights: The headlight shapes and internal lens cluster arrangements are unique. They differ from both the first-generation GP0 blocks and the final production GP1 headlight architecture.
• Side mirrors: The prototype is equipped with modified mirror housings featuring thinner and longer turn signal repeaters running along the entire length of the housing.
• Tail lights: The main rear light clusters received a deeper, dark cherry tinted shade, while the reverse light sections are noticeably darkened compared to the standard versions.
• Body kit elements: The lower sections of the bumpers and side skirts are fully painted in body color, unlike the production versions where these parts are painted black.
• Production mold modifications: Analysis of the casting interior reveals that Minichamps engineered a completely new metal matrix for this model, bearing factory tooling stamp PA1001-01D (the base pre-facelift GP0 mold is stamped PA349-01D). Before releasing the official production dealer GP1, the manufacturer had to completely change the front section of this matrix to match the standard civilian bumper.
• Hybrid sample construction: As is standard practice for early factory trial shots, the plastic chassis underbody was borrowed from the older 2002 GP0 mold. Factory engineers used this temporarily to verify metal shrinkage, wheelbase geometry, and parts fitment prior to final approval and modification of the accompanying production molds.
Whether this sample was an early exploratory variant of the facelift or a closed project for a high-performance Phaeton R60, the model remains a highly valuable artifact of Minichamps and Volkswagen industrial history.
