Trabant — a brand of East German minicar cars, produced by the national enterprise Sachsenring Automobilwerke. The name of the car gave a landmark event - the launch of the Soviet "Sputnik" in space in 1957. Actually, Trabant in German means "Sputnik". Production of the car began in the same 1957 at the car factory in Zwickau, the car had an index of P50. In 1962, the production of the P60 model began. Completely modernized restyling model received the index P601. Unusual were hinged body parts - they were made of duroplast, a material similar in properties to fiberglass. A total of 3,132,240 Trabants of all modifications were produced. The production of Trabant cars was discontinued in 1991, following the transition of the plant to Volkswagen's control. In the early 90's attempts were made to revive the brand, but unsuccessful. In 2008, the company Herpa bought the rights to release cars under the brand name "Trabant". In 2009, the concept Trabant nT was introduced and plans were announced for the organization of production of electric vehicles under the legendary brand by 2012, but due to lack of financing the project was curtailed.
