Wartburg — a brand of East German cars, manufactured from 1956 to 1991 at the national enterprise Automobilwerk Eisenach in the city of Eisenach. But the history of the brand begins much earlier. A small car company from the town of Eisenach in Thuringia released its first car in 1898, giving it the name of the local castle Wartburg. It was a copy of the French car Decalville, equipped with a single-cylinder 3.5-horsepower air-cooled engine. A year later the car was offered under the brand Dixi. Fame came in 1927 with the release of a small car DA-1 under the license of Austin Seven, which became the prototype of the first BMW. After the Second World War, the Eisenach plant moved to the GDR, and initially there were produced pre-war DKWs under the IFA brand, and in 1956 they started producing a new sedan, which was given the same name - Wartburg. It was a simple 4-seat front-wheel drive model with a converted 3-cylinder two-stroke engine from the pre-war DKW. In 1966, an improved Wartburg appeared, which remained in production until the last days of the GDR. In the early 90-ies of the last century, the Wartburg brand ceased to exist, and the plant went under the control of Opel.
